Discover what's happening in the Kansas Legislature. Representatives and Senators with constituents in Johnson County will discuss the new legislative session, followed by Q&A. You bring the questions! This series is presented in partnership with the Johnson County Library.

Medical Marijuana: Up in Smoke in Kansas?
Proponents have long advocated for the legalization of medicinal marijuana in Kansas. Yet, the legislature continues to hold back its adoption. This program will include discussion regarding some questions about medical marijuana, along with finding out if Kansas is closer or further away from the realization of meaningful legislation on medical marijauna.

Book Club: The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks

On Tuesday, April 16, 2024, we will discuss “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” by Rachel Skoot. Published 14 years ago (2012), this book resonates with women’s health, racial disparity in healthcare, and medical ethics. Henrietta Lacks' descendants reached a settlement with Thermo Fisher Scientific over the use of her 'stolen' cells. However, her story is not over, as her family continues to sue other pharmaceutical companies. This will be a virtual event.

In-Person Book Club: The Only Woman in the Room

Join us and discuss The Only Woman in the Room by Marie Benedict. This novel (historical fiction) tells the story of Hedy Lamarr, a screen star, scientist, and inventor.  The JOCO library has 22 copies. Additionally, it is available on Amazon for $9.00, or free on Kindle Unlimited.
